The responsive "Hidden Nature" application can be used to identify natural elements around you, such a type of plant or animal. There is no need to consult field guides or search the internet when identifying and enjoying nature - both indoors and far afield.

layout

We went through an iterative process when creating a layout for the application. We started out by creating wireframe sketches and user journeys on a whiteboard. These sketches were then recreated as wireframes in Axure. When creating the prototype we worked on a schedule because only one person could work on the prototype at a time. By being on a set schedule and having a task list for what we each needed to complete during our time frames, we were able to finish the prototype in a timely manner.

Brand Identity

After we did research about the target audience, we decided a minimal design for the logo would be the best fit for our website. The logo representing molecules was created. It conveys the idea of the universe, symbolizing everything in the natural world. Red represents the start of life and the day, and blue represents the end of life and night. They form a circle: the endless cycle of life.

usability test

The participants were given a set of representative task scenarios to attempt to complete. They were to provide feedback regarding the usability of the application, as well as answer post-task and post-test questions.

Test goals - We investigated:

  • Pain points and pleasing experiences

  • If and where the app was confusing or performed unexpectedly

  • The overall satisfaction level of the application

Participants - 9 total

  • Technology comfort level ranged from low to expert

  • Age range was 24 - 71

  • Test conditions: Four tasks per user

  • Recruited users based on criteria that mapped to our target audience

  • Tested across desktop, tablet, and phone

  • In-person and remote tests (while taking notes & recording audio)

findings and recommendations

  • We revised the prototype with the following concrete recommendations:

  • Homepage: Made "Identify" top priority, added click-ability to representative images, moved "Explore" to top, changed carousel direction

  • Created: Detail page pattern with additional (non-text) content, back arrow functionality, additional details on results page, filtering pattern on "View all" & "Results" pages, new follower/following pattern, new copy for clarification on "Login" page

  • My Profile: Removed followers to reduce confusion

  • My Collection: Added to main navigation, included favorites & sightings

  • Global: Revised confusing language, changed confusing icons to copy-based CTAs, added logo click-ability, added "hamburger" navigation icon

final product

We improved the overall experience of the "Hidden Nature" application across all devices, using prioritized user feedback. Our final deliverable is a responsive, mid-fidelity Axure prototype. Check out our prototype: hidden Nature
