IMPAC Website Re-design

Illinois State Medical Society Political Action Committee is a non-partisan organization that supports candidates who are advocates for Illinois physicians and their patients.

My Contributions: Sketches/Wireframes, Front-end Development

PRoblem and objective

The original IMPAC website was non-responsive and not mobile friendly. Even though it presented some of the information regarding IMPAC, the pages did not have a consistent design for the brand and was not visually appealing, or functional. View the previous site.

Our goal was to re-design the website in order to increase SEO, branding, and user experience in order to increase site traffic and contributions.

Team: Marketer, Visual designer, UX designer/developer, and Political affairs associate

Completion Time: 4 months

Users

Most of our users are mainly older physicians and medical groups who have already been donating for years. We really wanted to try and focus this redesign towards a younger more modern generation of physicians who we know are going to be the voice of the future, while keeping in mind not to lose the loyalty of our current donors.

Process

Information Architecture and Navigation

Based on the content created and approved from our marketer and governmental affairs specialist, we then created the information architecture for the site. Due to our limited budget, we were not able to recruit actual users to do a card sort. Our IA was created based on competitor sites, our current knowledge of our users, and IA guidelines.

Page Layouts and Visual Design

I created sketches and low-fi wireframes based off of the the content provided. During this time, our designer and I worked iteratively in order to produce first draft visual designs of the website. Our marketer presented the visual designs to upper management for critique and approvals.

Development

Once the main navigation and page template layouts and homepage were created I began working on the development portion of the site. Working on visual design and development of the site at the same time allowed me to make big changes earlier on in the development process so as to allow time for testing and final edits.

Testing

Once the site development was complete, I had ten people in my department test the site and provide feedback on any issues they had as well as anything that might have been confusing to them. All users tested on both desktop and mobile. Having everyone test on their phones provided a lot of insight on how the mobile version was functioning on different brands of phones and screen sizes. Based on this feedback I was able to then do final updates and testing on the site before going live. View IMPAC website.
